With unusually large surf for the last few days and the festivities of Semana Santa -- Civil Protection recommends that people take their precautions before entering into any body of water, watch the children and not swimming after eating food or alcoholic beverages.

Surfing Calechosa

Also known as Ranchito Beach, Costalegre Jalisco

Surf was large here in Melaque and I thought I'd take a chance on going to Ranchito beach to see what was up and check out the new development called Calechosa Bay.  The road has been improved a bit and three buildings on the property have been started but have a long way to go.  Roy's house is looking good beyond the development and I remember when he was just living in a trailer waiting for the Ejido to let him build.

The surf was pretty good but the wind was starting to come up from offshore around noon.  Probably better in the mornings.  This is the first time I've seen any surfers there.  The beach is rocky and difficult to exit and enter.  That's why the one guy shown is entering off the rocks on the point.   Took him quite awhile to decide when to jump.

Careyitos Beach Privatized

Another Costalegre beach closed to the public and fisherman. A few days before the election on July 4th, a gate was built on the entrance road and is guarded by private police. You can pass on foot but need to park on the highway and walk about 200 meters

Fishermen reported Careyitos privatization of the federal zone, after the Ministry of Environment and Natural Resources (SEMARNAT) withdrew the concession two days before election day.

Barboza Felipe Vega, president of the Cooperative Fish Production Punta Pérula showed documents proving that the Federal Attorney for Environmental Protection (Profepa) closed the construction of what would be the premises of the fish market which was started with funds from the Ministry of Agriculture, Livestock, Rural Development, Fisheries and Food ( SAGARPA), with grant of five million pesos. The work was unfinished and there is only part of the foundation.

Fishermen condemed the act and waiting for election day to privatize. "This was already planned. They waited for the elections and and we don't expect any help from the current governor [Emilio Gonzalez Marquez] who did nothing for Tenacatita.

Boca de Iguanas beach access

Boca de Iguanas beach access was cut off for a few months after hurricane Jova. The beach trail was washed out and the trailer park wasn't letting people pass thru their property. I was up in La Manzanilla the other day and decide to see what was going on at Boca beach.

They brought in a lot of new fill to create a road/trail ... even tho motor vehicles are prohibited. Easy to walk out and wide enough you don't have to worry about the resident Cocodrilo, Pancho. The beach concession is back with tables, chairs, food and beer.

Update on Calechosa Bay

I was just over there today to see if the surf was up and it was. It had been over a year since my last visit and I hadn't seen Roy's house or the new development called Calechosa Bay. This beach is also known as Ranchito and is located behind the small community of the same name.

It looks like the road is slightly improved but will need 4-5 bridges to access the area in the summer during the rains unless you have a large 4WD vehicle. So far 3 structures are started, two houses and the "model home / sales office". All have a very long way to go. The picture also shows what the hillside looks like from Febuary thru June with no rain for many months. A dry jungle is pretty much the ecology we live in here.

I did include a picture of the beach which is beautiful but not for swimming, really only surfers use it and it's difficult for them to enter and exit the water. Many jump off the rocks on the far right to avoid the shoreline.

The Costalegre

I have long thought that Costalegre was an agreed upon catch word for the Costa Alegre. Now I'm finding there is another long time standard, Coastecomates. This is about that area as well.

The stretch of coastline located between Costa Majahuas and Cihuatlán is the Costalegre or “happy coast.” Others describe the Costalegre as the area between Puerto Vallarta and Manzanillo. Either way it is still "the happy coast". Pacific Coast of Mexico
